  7. Before Use
  8. ----------
  9. RISC OS 2 users must place copies of Acorn's 'Fonts' and 'Super' modules 
  10. inside the !FontsPlus directory, or else ensure that they are already
  11. loaded before FontsPlus is started. The modules cannot be supplied because 
  12. of Acorn's copyright restrictions.

  15. Introduction
  16. ------------
  17. The Acorn RISC OS Operating System supports an excellent system of outline
  18. fonts, but there are some limitations to the system.
  19.  
  20. In particular, major problems are caused if you have a large number of
  21. outline fonts available. There are three particular problems:
  22.  
  23. i)    Font Menus in applications can become excessively long
  24. ii)   Applications can take a long time to create font menus
  25. ii)   Directories under RISC OS can only contain 79 different font families
  26.  
  27. In RISC OS 3, Acorn have gone some way towards rectifying this problem
  28. by providing support for multiple !Fonts folders. If you want to add
  29. another group of fonts, you just have to double-click on the !Fonts 
  30. folder. Getting rid of fonts is not so easy, requiring the use of the
  31. *FONTREMOVE command. The whole process is still not very user-friendly,
  32. and is not available to RISC OS 2 users using the authorised font manager.

  35. Setting up FontsPlus for use
  36. ----------------------------

  38. Drag folders containing font directories onto the FontsPlus icon on the
  39. icon bar (eg drag !Fonts and !MoreFonts onto the icon).
  40.  
  41. Alternatively, create directories with names such as 'Acorn' and 'Fancy',
  42. and into these copy the appropriate font directories (eg 'Trinity'). Then
  43. drag these group directories onto the FontsPlus icon.
  44.  
  45. Once this has been done, the folders of fonts will appear in the FontsPlus
  46. "Fonts" submenu, and clicking on a menu entry will cause that folder of
  47. fonts to be available for use. To save your choice of folders, choose the
  48. 'Save' option. To clear a folder from the menu, choose the 'Clear' option.
  49.  
  50. The folders containing fonts may be conventional !Fonts folders, possibly
  51. on different floppy discs, or alternatively they can simply be directories,
  52. containing the font directories only, without the need for any modules,
  53. sprites or obey files. Please note that individual font directories such
  54. as 'Trinity' should not be dragged onto the FontsPlus icon
  55.

  57. Operating System Specifics
  58. --------------------------

  60. RISC OS 2: 
  61. A module called 'FontPath' will be saved which enables the font list to be
  62. accessed much more quickly.
  63.  
  64. RISC OS 3:
  65. The built-in ROM fonts will always be available.

  68. Hints for use
  69. -------------
  70.  
  71. When selecting folders in the Fonts submenu, clicking with the ADJUST mouse
  72. button will keep the menu open for further selections (in conformance with
  73. Acorn guidelines)!
  74.  
  75. Applications written for RISC OS 3, and some RISC OS 2 applications such
  76. as Impression II support dynamic font menus. If the selection of available
  77. fonts changes, the application realises this, and recreates the font menu.
  78. This if you are half way through a project, and decide that you need more
  79. fonts, choose them using FontsPlus, and they will be added to the font menu
  80. in the application itself.

  82. Econet Level Four Fileserver managers should not attempt to save their
  83. choices of font folders from the fileserver machine. This must be done
  84. from a network station.

  86. Updates
  87. -------
  88. 2.14      The general release version
  89. 2.15      Allows more font folders than version 2.14
  90. 2.30      Major update - much code rewritten. In particular, allows font
  91.           folders to be anywhere in the directory structure by dragging
  92.           them onto the FontsPlus icon. Various other more minor changes.
  93.           Previous versions will no longer be supported.
  94. 2.31      Introduced 'Save' and 'Reset' menu options. Added support for
  95.           RISC OS 3 font manager, although this has yet to be tested.  
  96. 2.40      Much recoding for RISC OS 3 and Econet users.
  97. 2.41      Moved 'Save' and 'Clear' options to submenu       
  98. 2.42      Introduced 'Clear' submenu, and introduced checks to ensure that
  99.           at least one font folder selected.
  100. 2.43      Minor Bug fixes
  101. 2.44      Now allows several folders with same leafname. ROMfonts always
  102.           available if possible. Folder re-dragging bug fixed.
  103. 2.45      More bug fixes. Tidied up for RISC OS 3, now that I have it.
